Teror Town Introduction

  • Teror is a beautiful and picturesque town in the northeast of Gran Canaria half way towards the centre of the island, around 20 km from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, on the GC-21the most scenic route.

Virgin of the Pines Statue (Virgen del Pino)

  • The Virgin of the Pine statue is the most important religious objects in the Basilica and in Gran Canaria because the Virgin of the Pine is the Patron Saint of tGran Canaria making Teror the the religious centre of the island.
  • The face is half sad & half happy. The statue is bedecked with precious stones and the clothing is beautiful embroidered
  • The Virgin of the Pine appearance, was by tradition, in 1481 at the top of a large pine tree located next to the Green Cross in Virgen del Pino Square, Teror.
  • Although there are 2 large fir trees and a beautiful very large laurel tree and some smaller trees, the original fir tree was brought down in a storm.
  • This date was before the final conquest of Gran Canaria by Spain over the local native Guanches peoples.

The Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino is the main attraction in Teror and a place of pilgrimage for many Canarians. This temple, dedicated to the patron saint of the island, is an architectural wonder that combines Gothic and neoclassical elements. Its interior houses an impressive image of the Virgen del Pino, as well as several altarpieces and pieces of sacred art that will leave you breathless.

Pine Square (Plaza del Pino)

  • The (Plaza del Pino is a large square located in front of the main entrance to the Basilica in the central part of the historic centre.
  • The square is where the towns most important events take place, including the Sunday Market & Religious Festivals & Fairs
  • The very popular Teror Street Market takes place on Sundays in the Plaza del Pino and the surroundings of the Basilica. Popular with both locals & tourists..
  • The large tree is an Indian Laurel, a fig tree.

  • Statue: Nestor Alamo Monumento (Monumento). Although a journalist & composer he is best known as a musical composer with over 40 songs mainly about Gran Canaria a  some about Teror. His main one , Shadow of the Cloud (Sombra del Nublo), became the official anthem of Gran Canaria in 2008.
  • Statue: Bust of Simon Bolivar. Simon Bolivar was a liberator in Latin America. He sought to make Venezuela independent from the colonial rule of Spain. His grandfather came from Teror

  • The very popular traditional Street Market in Teror takes place on Sundays in the Plaza del Pino and the streets & squares surrounding the Basilica.
  • Popular with both locals & tourists.
  • Every Sunday, from 08.00 to 14:00 hour.
  • Goods include local artisan craft products, fresh food, handicrafts, clothing, tourist souvenirs, and a place to enjoy Canarian cuisine

  • The Fuente Agria de Teror is a natural spring, a source of natural mineral water with medicinal properties. The fountain, actually 3 taps, is situated in a small 4 sided buildin6, with a large open arch entrance
  • Located next to a bottling factory, Aguas de Teror, that sells the mineral water setting and is a popular spot for both locals and visitors looking to enjoy its beneficial water, which is free directly.
  • If you visit you may find the locals filling a multitude of plastic bottles
  • One of the start points of the Sendero del Álamo Ravine Walk

Hiking in the Teror Surroundings

The natural scenery around Teror is amazing wonderful for hiking is. There are numerous routes that start from the town and that will allow you to discover dream landscapes, such as the Doramas Natural Park or the Finca de Osorio . Don't forget to wear comfortable shoe, wear sunscreen and take plenty of water with yo. Also don't forget your camera to immortalize the panoramic views.

La Finca de Osorio is a protected natural area1 kilometre north from The Basilica of Teror. This park & garden is perfect for outdoor activities such as hiking, picnics and bird watching. Well-marked trails will take you through laurel forests, meadows and old crops, offering spectacular views of Gran Canaria's mountainous landscape.

Sendero del Álamo Barranco (Ravine) Walk


Sendero del Álamo Barranco (Ravine) Walk a route with stairs that can induce vertigo in suspectable people.

A very pretty & picturesque circular walk around 7 kilometres, most of it in the ravine bottom that has its sides ow wall covered in trees & very thick vegetation.
